Welcoming Five New KidsGardening Board Members

We’re thrilled to welcome five inspiring leaders to the KidsGardening Board of Directors, each bringing deep experience in education, food systems, horticulture, and community-based work that strengthens our mission to connect kids with the joy and power of gardening.

As Executive Director of the Farm to School Department for Houston ISD Nutrition Services, he oversees a 6.5-acre educational farm, hands-on food education programs, and sustainability initiatives reaching thousands of students. A former 4-H Agent and longtime community leader, Marcus is passionate about helping children build meaningful relationships with food, health, and nature.

 

Jenna Mobley, a smiling blond woman with long hair and glassesJenna Mobley is a nationally recognized educator and innovator in environmental education and food access. A recipient of the Presidential Innovation Award for Educators and multiple “40 Under 40” honors, she develops curriculum and trains teachers worldwide while leading school-based gardening programs in Atlanta. She also serves as Co-Executive Director of Community Farmers Markets, expanding community health and local food education across the city.

 

A headshot of Acacia Blassengale, a Black woman with short black hairAcacia Blassengale is an urban farmer, educator, and social worker with more than 20 years of experience supporting children and families through hands-on, nature-based learning. She founded Rabbits 4 Good, blending animal-assisted therapy with regenerative gardening practices, and created soil-building products that promote healthy ecosystems. Her work centers healing, stewardship, and equitable access to garden education.

Working with a statewide school garden program, he helps students learn to grow their own food while supporting national efforts to connect young people with green industry careers through Seed Your Future. Nathan believes access to green space is essential for both mental health and community well-being.

 

 

Don Smith is smiling and wearing a baseball hat that says Minnesota.Andrew “Don” Smith, a retired general surgeon turned master gardener, has dedicated years to community gardening and outreach in Minnesota. From seed libraries to farmers markets and park beautification projects, Don has supported countless local efforts that bring people together through growing and sharing food.

 

 

Together, these new members join a diverse and committed KidsGardening Board made up of educators, nonprofit leaders, horticulture professionals, and community advocates from across the country, all united by a belief in the transformative power of gardens for children.

At a time when the world can feel heavy and uncertain, gardens remain a simple, powerful joy we can grow and share. They offer kids spaces for curiosity, healing, learning, and hope, and they connect communities in ways that truly matter. With our expanded Board’s leadership and vision, we’re more energized than ever to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive through gardening.
