2025 Water Wise Garden Winners

Congratulations to the 2025 Waterwise Garden Grant Winners!

Hunter Industries and KidsGardening congratulate the Waterwise Garden Grant winners! In 2025, these five elementary schools in San Diego County will be awarded $1,000 in funding and an irrigation supply kit valued at $500.

Bobier Elementary (Vista, CA)

In Bobier Elementary's new garden, students will learn about drip irrigation, mulching, and rainwater harvesting, in order to understand the importance of water conservation for ecosystems, wildlife, and future generations. They will also participate in projects that promote water conservation and stewardship in their local community in order to build critical thinking skills to address water-related challenges and find sustainable solutions.

Liberty Elementary (Chula Vista, CA)

Liberty Elementary’s garden will be an interactive learning space where students can explore the importance of water conservation and stewardship through hands-on experiences. Through the LEAD after-school club and integrated classroom lessons, students will engage in activities such as monitoring soil moisture, adjusting irrigation schedules, and understanding the impact of weather patterns on watering needs. Additionally, students will participate in lessons on the water cycle and the environmental impact of water usage to develop a deeper understanding of their role in protecting and conserving water.

Monte Vista Elementary School (Vista, CA)

The new outdoor classroom at Monte Vista Elementary School will teach topics like native plant selection, water cycle principles, and sustainable gardening practices, fostering a deeper understanding of the environmental impact of their actions. This learning will instill a sense of responsibility and empower their students to apply these practices in their own lives, promoting long-term stewardship of natural resources.

Rolando Elementary (La Mesa, CA)

The new Peace Garden at Rolando Elementary will integrate the garden into the curriculum, so students will learn about the importance of water as a vital resource and the need to manage it responsibly. Lessons will also cover the science behind soil moisture retention, the benefits of mulching, and the selection of drought-tolerant plants, all of which contribute to conserving water in the garden. The garden will also emphasize the broader implications of water stewardship, teaching students how their actions can positively impact the local environment and water resources.

Toler Elementary School (San Diego, CA)

Toler Elementary’s school garden program, in partnership with Sage Garden and San Diego County Master Gardener Association, will improve its existing garden to teach students about water conservation and stewardship. Students will learn and practice various watering methods, compare container and in-ground planting methods, and learn how to select the right irrigation method based on the differing water needs of plants.
